Joe Sando Day
October 25 is Joe S. Sando Day,
as proclaimed by the city of Albuquerque.
Once or twice in a lifetime we are graced with the presence of special people ~ people blessed with a way of telling our stories. Joe S. Sando, Dr. Sando, Joe, is my once-in-a-lifetime special person. Over more than the last fifty years, Joe has studied, researched, and written about us as Pueblo people of the Southwest. He has told our story not only to the world, but as often to each of us. Joe has a gifted way of finding that beginning place in all stories, then taking us along with him through that story and into the next. Walking through the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center with Joe Sando is like walking through one of his books as it's being written. Someone will say, "Hi, Dr. Sando, I think you know my auntie." From that point forward Joe traces the genealogy of the auntie and the questioner with scrupulous description of time, place and event. I don't know how Joe Sando does this story making, but what I do know is that Joe Sando - friend, scholar, author, historian – has given us, the Pueblo people, his people, a true look into ourselves, our cultures, our very way of being as no other before or since. We are graced with your presence and your work, Joe Sando, and grateful for all of it.
Now it is your time to tell your story to us in Pueblo Recollections.
